International Communication Section

The antecedents of the International Communication Section go back to 1968 when the IAMCR Executive Committee in its meeting in Ljubljana decided to found a new section named ‘International Understanding’. It was formalised as a Section at the Warsaw conference in 1978. At present it is one the largest Sections of the association.

In the International Communication Section we are proud of our diversity and the truly international character that motivates us. We welcome the participation of colleagues from all over the world who wish to present the results of their research on national, inter-regional and international issues that have to do with all subjects of communication, including journalism, political communication, globalisation and other inter-cultural forms of expression. The comparative analysis of the media is an instrument to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of different countries and geo-political regions. In this sense, we welcome comparative studies of the media’s role in foreign policy-making, the (often complex) relationship between citizens and the media in different continents, media ethics and the relationship of media policies to political and governmental authorities – with a special focus on environmental problems and how they are presented by the media in different parts of the world.

This section also considers the role of the media in constructing a sense of community across borders, including the development of virtual communities and the uses of new media, their implications for citizens and societies and the objectives they pursue in order to achieve a better world. You are welcome to send your abstracts to our section in English, French, and Spanish.

To strengthen all of the above, this section collaborates with the journal “Global Media and China”.
